A vegetarian take on Texas-style home cooking
A lot of my readers are vegetarian or plant-based, so I like to feature those books and recipes on a regular basis. We continue to eat tons and tons of plants, even though we’re eating more on the paleo side of things now. When I saw this title Meatless in Cowtown: A Vegetarian Guide to Food and Wine, Texas-Style I had to say yes to a review copy. Who doesn’t love Texas-style BBQ? I was curious to see their vegetarian take on such a meat-centric cuisine. We have family in Austin and believe me, meat always seems to be on the menu. The authors met while working for Bon Appetit magazine, bringing an expertise on both food and cocktails to the book.
Layout and design:
The book is organized into seven chapters: snacks & starters, soups & salads, main courses, breakfast, side dishes, desserts, and drinks. The design is beautiful and evokes Texas hill country living. Some of the typeface is light tan, making it hard to read.
A full-page full-color photograph is provided every three or four pages, with beautiful food and prop styling.
Recipes include restaurant-style smoky red salsa, Chisholm trail mix, baked tofu pine nut and cilantro salad, spicy tortilla soup, meatless in cowtown frito pie, poblano chile rellenos with chipotle sauce, Southern brunch grits, migas with peppers and onions, Mexican-style corn on the cob with cilantro-chili aioli, Texas peach cobbler, Texas sheet cake with mocha frosting toasted pecans and toffee, cowtown shandy, and my paloma (cocktail). If you eat gluten-free (recipes are coded), only buy this book if you really understand how to renovate recipes to make them gluten-free.
What I liked about the book:
Fun layout, authoritative authors, a great cocktail section (atypical for the books I tend to review). Recipes are coded for V and GF diets. Every recipe includes suggestions for beer, wine, and cocktail pairings.
I wasn’t so keen on:
Nutritional analysis is not provided, which would be helpful for low-sodium eaters.
vegan and vegetarian eaters (see note about gluten-free recipes)
Not recommended for:
Migraine, paleo, celiac/gluten-free, or low-sodium diets
A note about my cookbook reviews: In the past, I tested at least three recipes from each book, took photos, and described my experience. Due to my dietary limitations (extremely-low-sodium for my Meniere’s Disease and trigger-free foods for migraine relief), it is no longer possible for me to test the recipes and do them justice.
