It’s fall, so it must be time for another gorgeous book from Nava Atlas. I had the pleasure of reviewing Nava’s Wild About Greens, and Vegan Holiday Kitchen and her recipes were amazing. So I am certain that this book would provide you with tons more fantastic choices, as it contains more than 150 recipes. Plant Power: Transform Your Kitchen, Plate, and Life with More Than 150 Fresh and Flavorful Vegan Recipes is a hardcover go-to handbook that’s not just for vegans and vegetarians. Everyone will find something to love inside.
Layout and design:
The book is divided into two parts. Plant-Powered Living covers her journey, benefits, top myths, nutrition basics, setting up your pantry, buying and storing foods, tools, meal planning, make-ahead meals, shopping tips, 5 ways to eat more leafy greens, and tips for families, couples, and singles. Part Two: Recipes and Menus gives you the following chapters: protein, soups & stews, pasta & pizza, Asian express, tortilla specialties, wraps sandwiches & burgers, salad and vegetable entrees and sides, breakfast lunch snacks and healthful sweets.
I have tried many of Nava’s recipes in the past, so I am sure these are all delicious! Ones that sounded intriguing to me include: sweet and smoky beans and greens, coconut cream of orange vegetables soup, red pizza with bell peppers and artichokes, Thai-style pineapple-coconut rice, fully-loaded emergency nachos, smoky tempeh and avocado reuben sandwiches, vegan Nicoise-style salad, and homemade chocolate energy bars.
What I liked about the book:
Lovely layout, high quality images and paper, nutritional analysis is provided. Most recipes include suggestions for other recipes in the book to round out a meal.
I wasn’t so keen on:
It would have been great to indicate which recipes are gluten-free.
vegans, vegetarians, whole foods eaters, paleo people who really know your diet looking for inspiring ways of cooking veggies
Not recommended for:
Migraine, low-sodium diets (although many recipes are reasonably low in sodium), people new to paleo
A note about my cookbook reviews: In the past, I tested at least three recipes from each book, took photos, and described my experience. Due to my dietary limitations (extremely-low-sodium for my Meniere’s Disease and trigger-free foods for migraine relief), it is no longer possible for me to test the recipes and do them justice.
