To-die-for tempeh tacos from Lotus Cafe in Hillcrest.
I’ve eaten at Lotus Cafe twice now, and wanted to feature it because of the high quality of the food and the friendly staff. Lotus Cafe is in the former Pizza Nova space in the Village Hillcrest Center. They offer two hours free parking (with validation) in the parking garage. The menu offers vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and chicken/fish options, so there really is something for everyone.
You order at the cashier’s stand, get your own drinks and silverware, and seat yourself. They offer a nice array of teas and condiments, including GF tamari and Bragg’s. (I only wish they had gotten a slightly better grade of flatware, as it’s very flimsy.)
They have a nice smoothie/juice menu, including wheat grass. The second time I ate there I had the baked sweet potato topped with steamed veggies and Daiya cheese. The veggies had not been drained properly, making the whole dish a bit soggy. But they redeemed themselves with the carrot-lemon cupcake, which was vegan and gluten-free and amazing. I truly appreciate how knowledgeable they are about their menu, and how many gluten-free and vegan options they have. If you’re in San Diego, have you eaten at Lotus Cafe? What are your favorite menu items and recommendations? Check it out and let me know what you think!
