A whole-foods, how-to approach from the author of the best-selling Health By Chocolate.
I received this advance copy of Real-Life Vegan from the author with a request to review it. The how-to approach will be a useful addition to this month’s book selections, especially if you think you might want to try a plant-based diet but don’t know where to begin. Layout and design:
The book is organized into three sections: 1) Nutrition Excellence (Whole Food Matters and Setting Up A Whole-Foods Kitchen), 2) 10 Weeks of Quick-Fix Complete Meals, and 3) Energy Breakfasts, Snacks, & Treats. Some of the design and font choices make the book less user-friendly than intended.
Photographs from a number of photographers are included in the book.
Recipes include Canadian roasted root veg poutine, creamy tahini potato salad, Hawai’ian sweet n sour tempeh hotpot, mint mojito cocktail, oat-rageous bean burgers, blueberry chia jam, and fruit crisp crumble. All recipes are gluten-free.
What I liked about the book:
The ten weeks of complete menus would be useful for someone just starting out with a plant-based diet, and the rationale behind whole foods eating is clearly stated.
I wasn’t so keen on:
Recipes were not coded for special diets; nutritional analysis is not provided, which would be helpful for low-sodium eaters.
vegan, vegetarian, celiac, and gluten-free eaters
Not recommended for:
Migraine, paleo, or low-sodium diets
A note about my cookbook reviews: In the past, I tested at least three recipes from each book, took photos, and described my experience. Due to my dietary limitations (extremely-low-sodium for my Meniere’s Disease and trigger-free foods for migraine relief), it is no longer possible for me to test the recipes and do them justice.
