I was at the North Park Farmer’s Market on Thursday, and FoodFarm food truck was featuring their dollar-a-dish offering: Chili fries with soy chorizo. Yum! So what is Dollar a Dish?
The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program at the San Diego Food Bank provides food to elementary school children who receive free school meals during the week, but are going hungry over the weekends when school is out. Some kids return to school on Monday having eaten little or nothing since Friday lunch. Not only is this really sad (and shouldn’t be happening in San Diego), but greatly affects their performance in school and in life, which ultimately affects all of us.
Right now the program serves 800 children in 22 schools, with next year’s goal of 1050 children in 26 schools (2011-2012). Find more detailed information about the Food 4 Kids Backpack program here.
San Diego food bloggers Caron Golden and Alice Robertson launched a grassroots food drive and fundraiser to support the program in 2009. Two local restaurants donated a “dollar a dish” for a featured dish for one month. The entire campaign raised over $6,000 and more than double that in 2010.
You can participate! Plan at least one meal at any one of these 30 San Diego restaurants or gourmet food trucks through the end of August.
