Reader sweepstakes & book review: Great Gluten-free Vegan Eats

by Stephanie Weaver on September 28, 2012

Gluten-free Vegan Eats Cookbook giveawayCan you imagine my total joy at receiving this cookbook, an ENTIRE COOKBOOK OF RECIPES I CAN EAT? No renovating? Yum, yum, yum. So I asked the nice people who publish it if I could give away two copies, and they said yes. It’s Great Gluten-Free Vegan Eats: Cut Out the Gluten and Enjoy an Even Healthier Vegan Diet with Recipes for Fabulous, Allergy-Free Fare. Also included in the giveaway is a prize package of essential gluten-free flours that Allyson uses in most of her recipes from my friends at Bob’s Red Mill.

What I liked about the book: Every single recipe is both gluten-free and vegan!  She opens with a primer on gluten-free flours and vegan ingredient substitutions, as well as some “basics” recipes like almond milk, white chocolate, and gluten-free pasta. I love that every single recipe has a full-color photograph, and Kramer’s friendly, chatty style makes it easy to see why her blog, Manifest Vegan, is so popular. She inspired me to try making pasta for the very first time, which was fun. The layout and look of the book is great, so approachable.

I wasn’t so keen on: I had some trouble with the recipes I tested, which was a little disappointing. I tried the Homemade Pasta recipe in order to make the Walnut Ravioli with Vodka Sauce. I didn’t have superfine brown rice flour (it’s on order) so I’m going to chalk up the trouble I had with the pasta to my flour choice and not the recipe. It did seem like the proportions were off in terms of how much filling to put in each ravioli. She called for 2 teaspoons and I think 1 teaspoon would work better. I assume it was a typo to roll out the dough to 1-1/8″ thick… so I rolled it to 1/8″ as best I could. Her filling was delicious and I will definitely try making pasta again.

I liked her Tofu Feta recipe, especially after 3 days of marinating, although I’m not sure that freezing the tofu added anything to the texture and added an extra step and more time. I made the Mediterranean Croquettes, which were good but mine seemed a little dry.

The recipe for the White Chocolate Baking Bar didn’t come out as pictured (mine separated), perhaps because I used powdered coconut sugar instead of powdered cane sugar.

I know you’ll find tons of yummy recipes to try in this cookbook, and am excited to be able to share it with two readers. The Bob’s package will ship separately.

I used to live in high altitude Colorado so was afraid making pasta would be a disaster. Haven’t tried to make it since moving to California. I need to get brave! Less than a year at GF eating but it’s necessary to function, so I keep trying. All your info looks great!

I’ve never made pasta from scratch. I’ve had it on the to-do list at one point, but then got lazy and went out and bought a box of pasta instead!

11 Michaela October 3, 2012 at 2:35 AM

I thought about making ravioli from scratch, but a nifty trick is to use wonton wrappers! I’m sure that homemade dough tastes better but this will do for now…

12 Ann October 2, 2012 at 10:45 PM

I never have, I’ve been to chicken, but now that my son is gluten free, I’m willing to try!

21 Rachel October 2, 2012 at 3:25 AM

Haven’t made pasta from scratch before. Would like to try it sometime.

I’m vegetarian, and just found out that I’m allergic to gluten, so finding your site has been a godsend! All this is so new that this cookbook would be a great start. I have made fresh pasta before, and it was a disaster. I spent more time cleaning up all the flour! I just had a baby, so I’m looking forward to cooking with him in a couple years!

I have never made pasta from scratch – but to be honest, I was not confident on the outcome! While I love to cook, some things just seem out of range for me. Must get out of my comfort zone and try!

I have never made pasta from scratch…although I often day dream of running through the attachment on my kitchen aid while classical music plays in the background and tomato sauce bubbles on the stove.

I’ve never made pasta from scratch…will have to try that with the kids, age 2 and 4, sometime when I’ve got an extra measure of patience :)

49 Sharon P October 1, 2012 at 6:38 PM

So funny, I decided to make homemade butternut squash ravioli tonight in honor of World Vegetarian Day! I’ve made potato gnocchi with great success, and years ago made fettucini, trying hand cut and machine cut. I found my dough was not smooth enough so the final noodles were rough-edged, though tasty. Tonight I’m trying semolina ‘pasta flour’ :)

50 Mary R October 1, 2012 at 6:36 PM

I have not made pasta from scratch.

51 Tiffany S October 1, 2012 at 6:34 PM

Ages ago. I turned out pretty well though I had trouble getting it rolled thin enough. And it definitely was not gluten-free!

52 Vik October 1, 2012 at 3:22 AM

Dear RR–pasta is one thing we never have tried. Did you cut the pasta by hand? The cookbook looks fab! :-)

53 Blaine October 1, 2012 at 3:14 AM

Yep! Totally worth the effort

54 Kristin September 30, 2012 at 7:19 PM

I love to make my own pasta and have been doing so for a long time. I make homemade everything, even my own laundry soap. At least I know what’s in my food and products.

I have made pasta from scratch. Long before I was gluten free and vegan. I want on a trip to Italy with my family and we took a cooking class with an incredible chef where we made pasta from scratch. It was difficult but delicious.

My pasta from scratch was a disaster. After I taught a hands-on pasta-making class with the talented Nadia Frigeri, my talent failed to shine – I gave up after that. Would love to try some of these products…”Xanthan Gum” sounds so exotic!

75 noelle September 28, 2012 at 5:21 PM

Does gnocchi count? I’m afraid that I personally have not made pasta from scratch, but I have eaten them. :) I do recall making ravioli when I was a child and used the little roller thing to cut the ravioli.

78 Christina September 28, 2012 at 4:54 PM

My pasta from scratch turns out beautifully – because I color it with beets or green stuff!
